Fun Ways to Celebrate Your First Year as a Married Couple

Your first anniversary as a married couple is a significant milestone in your life. It may not be as important as the big day a year before, but it’s still a cause for celebration. It’s a time for fun activities to commemorate your wedding and reflection on the past 365 days of wedded bliss.

Eat a Slice of Your Wedding Cake

Many couples save the top tier of their wedding cake specifically for their first anniversary or order a similar cake if that was not an option. Eat a slice or two of cake to help relive your wedding day.

For an enduring keepsake, add a new cake topper to the cake. Cake toppers celebrating an anniversary or representing the promise of love are ideal for showing your continuing love for each other. If possible, bring the cake to where you held the wedding, or choose another romantic spot to eat and reminisce.

Display or Use Your Wedding Gifts

Many wedding gifts are situational or seasonal. If you received a stand mixer or dining set from a relative, you might not use it every day. A nativity set, for example, is typically reserved for display during the holidays. Make an effort to use your wedding gifts on your anniversary. Use the stand mixer to make cookies. Use the fancy dining set—even if your dinner isn’t fancy. Display the nativity set or artwork you may have received. Recall who gave you each item and let them know you are still enjoying their gift. Post some photos of you enjoying the gifts on social media or send thank you notes!

Recreate the Menu

You may have hurried through your dinner on your wedding night, but a year later, savor the luxury of slowing down. Recreate your dinner menu one of two ways. First, by ordering from the same caterer or restaurant for an authentic experience. Or, for a fun bonding experience, you and your spouse can try your hand at cooking your own version of the dinner.

Share the First Dance for a Second Time

Your first dance song likely holds a special meaning between you two. So put it on and dance across the living room. If you took choreography lessons, see if you remember the moves and recreate the dance as best as you can. If not, have fun making new moves!

View Wedding Photos and Videos

Flip through your wedding album. If you had a hashtag for Facebook or Instagram, search it, and see what others posted about your wedding. Get comfy on the couch and watch any wedding videos you have, whether from a professional videographer or friends and family. In the past year, you might have forgotten details the videos will reveal.

Invite Your Wedding Party

Throw a small, low-key party to celebrate your anniversary. Keep it small by inviting only the best man and maid of honor, or expand it to the entire wedding party. What memories do they have of the big day? This is the perfect opportunity to recreate your wedding’s signature cocktail and have a group toast.

About Willow Tree®

Willow Tree® figurative sculptures are an intimate line of artwork meant to comfort and inspire. Each piece is hand-painted, cast from artist Susan Lordi’s original carvings handcrafted in her Kansas City, Missouri studio. Willow Tree® figures have an absence of facial features and simplicity of form, opening interpretation to both the giver and receiver. The artful pieces instead reveal emotions through gestures such as placement of the hands, a turn of the body, or a tilt of the head. Lordi’s signature work makes memorable gifts for any occasion, including birthdays, memorial gifts, wedding and anniversary gifts, and more.
